Why Antigua and Barbuda Works for Indian Students
When parents think of the Caribbean, they often imagine beaches and tourism. But Antigua today is also a hub for international education. For Indian students, this small island offers:
- An English-speaking environment, so there’s no need to learn a new language.
- A safe, student-friendly culture with low crime rates.
- A medical education system modelled on the American curriculum, giving a direct advantage for USMLE aspirants.
- A supportive Indian community and easy access to Indian food.
- A climate very similar to southern India, which makes adaptation easier.
For students dreaming of studying medicine abroad but aiming for a global career, Antigua is a practical, modern, and comfortable option.
How the MBBS/MD Program is Structured
The program at UHSA is divided into two main parts:
Basic Sciences (First 2–2.5 years)
This phase focuses on classroom learning with subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Microbiology. From the beginning, students are guided with USMLE Step 1 preparation, so they are aligned with American licensing exams.
Clinical Sciences (Last 3 years)
Students move into real hospitals, doing clinical rotations in Antigua and also in affiliated hospitals in the USA, UK, and Canada. Core areas include Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, OB-GYN, Psychiatry, and Family Medicine. Students also have options for electives like Neurology, Radiology, and Emergency Medicine.
